Indoor Track Season Comes To An End
As Spring approaches, another indoor track and field season - and a fresh set of school records - enter the history books.
The YCCC Hawks competed in five events this winter, collecting placement points for the team in each event and gaining momentum towards their spring season.
The season began with the USM Open on January 6th - an event that saw Freshman Tyler Davies set a new school record for the High Jump at 1.63m as the Men's team picked up 7 points and finished the event in 9th place.
January 20th, the Hawks competed in the Panther Invitational, where Sophomore Captain Michael Crosby set the school record for the 60m hurdles, finishing in 9.61 seconds, earning a 6th place result in the event. The event was a banner day for the women as well, with Freshman jumper Blair Martin setting the school record for the High Jump at 1.35m, and Sophomore Izze Gray setting both the weight throw record (10.13m) and the shot-put record (9.44m).
The following weekend, the Hawks returned to USM for the Husky Invitational, where Blair Martin set a second record in as many weeks, beating her own long-jump distance and setting a new school record at 4.47m. The same weekend, Michael Crosby picked up a 5th place finish in the Men's 600m run, completing the race in 1:33.56.
The season culminated on Feb 11th at the SMAC Winter Indoor Meet, a day for the record books for YCCC track and field. The Hawks picked up placement points in 14 different events and set seven school records in the process. On the men's side, Michael Crosby broke the 600m record with a time of 1:32.18, Ryan Brennan finished the 1000m race in 3:25.60, and Michael Crosby, Tyler Davies, Andre Dallaire and Nolan Tosoni combined for a 4:07.18 time in the 4x400 relay. On the Women's side, Freshman Blair Martin set the 200m record at 31.09 and Amy Stults set three records on her own - finishing the 1000 meter run in 3:40.90, the 3000m run in 11:49.86 and the 5000m in 21:09.89.
"We had a great indoor track season," said Head Coach Andy Clement, who's in his third season as the Track and Field coach at YCCC. "Both our men's and women's teams have a chance at earning some hardware at our conference meet at the end of April." Men's Captain Michael Crosby added "We're just going to keep getting better and better... a storm is coming and lightning is ready to strike."
"The baseline has been established for what we can accomplish individually and as a team," said Women's Captain Amy Stults. "We are all excited to see what level we can reach during the upcoming outdoor season, and we're dedicated to using the next month to maximize our full potential. We are ready to take flight and rise above!"
The Hawks are scheduled to compete at four events in the Spring, including the YSCC and USCAA championships. To stay up to date on all things Hawks Track and Field, visit the official YCCC Athletics website and follow along on social media. Go Hawks!
